Artist's Comments

I was running around like crazy trying to find an interesting angle to take a photograph of Iraqi soldiers running into an improvised building. I lined up behind one of the guys and shot this one over his shoulder to get the AK and a few of his buds. At first I was disappointed that the focus wasn't on the weapon, but when you see the professional stare that the guy in the middle is giving with the weapon pointed at him, it adds emotion (or lack of) to a photo that otherwise may have been dull.

So these pictures didn't disturb their training at all? Or did you zoom in from far away?

I was about 10 feet behind this guy probably ... These Iraqi Police are training to be part of an Emergency Response Team -- Basically ... They're going to be highly skilled killers. Besides following me with their eyes sometimes, they were very disciplined.

That's cool, so do you think they'll be able to manage the country themselves soon, without our military there?

The transition to manage their own country is well on it's way. Soon is relative. Americans want fast food Operation Desert Storm wars - in and out. If we want to be successful and complete our goals and not leave Iraq a mess, we'll have to stay here a lot longer than most people will like. But, do you want the job done right, or would you like another war for our kids to get in 20 years from now? I have no problem being here. I think it's a good cause, and I don't want to see my friends that I've made here live in a state of fear for the rest of their lives.

I never said it wasn't a good cause :), and I agree with staying longer if that's what is needed to stabilize the government. I think most people on DA (since most are artists) would understand taking a little extra time to make everything better :)

Not a dumb question at all ... There's a rope line on the ground that represents a room, and the guy with the gun is part of a team who's clearing the room as part of training. The other guys are just standing around watching.. Just think of him not even being there, there's a wall between them..
